Anatomic pathology plays a key role in patient care through disease diagnosis and management. The Breast Pathology Service at Chennai Breast centre provides diagnostic expertise in the interpretation of breast lesions from various specimen types, including needle core biopsies, stereotactic biopsies, lumpectomies, and mastectomy specimens. We also provide consultation services for samples referred to our centre for second opinions.

Being an integrated and comprehensive centre , our pathologist works in close unison with the radiology and treating team to give accurate and quick reports by utilizing a subspecialty expert sign-out system and state-of-the-art technology including imported automated instruments for efficient patient management.

To complement the traditional histologic diagnosis of breast cancer, our pathologists also provide interpretation of special studies, such as immunohistochemistry testing (ER/PR/ Her2/ Ki67 and other markers as well as DISH) and frozen sections.

Along with routine diagnostic workup, our pathology lab is future oriented preserving and archiving tumour tissues in the tumor bank for future research.

Breast Biopsy

A breast biopsy is a procedure in which a small sample of breast tissue is removed for examination under a microscope .It is typically done when a lump or abnormality is detected in the breast, and is used to determine whether the tissue is cancerous or benign (non-cancerous). Core needle biopsy is commonly done as an outpatient procedure under local anaesthesia. A breast biopsy is generally a safe procedure, and is often the best way to diagnose breast cancer or rule it out.
